Course Title: NRSG 359: Nursing Practice in Reproductive Health and Pediatric Care

Credits:3 (Clinical Lab)

Course Description: The focus of this course is application of health promotion, disease prevention, illness management, and nursing care concepts of children, their families and individuals seeking sexual and reproductive health service. Nursing care will take place in a variety of settings and among diverse populations in order to gain a foundational knowledge of reproductive care and care of the developing child. This course builds upon and integrates knowledge gained from nursing, sciences, and the humanities.  

 

Course Objectives:

  1. Utilize evidence-based nursing practice to care for patients seeking sexual and reproductive health services, care of a pregnant patient, newborn, well child, chronically and/or acutely ill child.
  2. Apply appropriate knowledge of physical, cognitive, emotional, social, and moral development throughout the pediatric developmental stages to examine safe, culturally competent quality nursing care for children, their families, and people seeking sexual and reproductive health services.
  3. Analyze specific health disparities and social justice issues related to nursing care of vulnerable populations.
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of safety and effective communication techniques.

 

Course Learning Outcomes: Upon completing this course the student will be able to:

  1. Apply developmental concepts, theories, and stages to their understanding of family and pediatric nursing care.
  2. Differentiate physiological differences in health assessments between adults and pediatric populations.
  3. Utilize the nursing process and evidence-based nursing practice when caring for children, their families, and those seeking sexual and reproductive health services.
  4. Practice within community-based and/or acute care nursing environments in caring for children, their families and individuals seeking sexual and reproductive health services.
  5. Provide safe care in a dynamic clinical situation utilizing effective communication techniques.
