New MSU Graduate Courses

To add a new MSU "hard-numbered" graduate course, download a copy of the New Graduate Course Request form, which is available in WORD or PDF formats below. Then, follow these steps:

  • Fill in the information on the front page of the form. You may print the form and fill in the blanks in pen or add the information to the WORD document.
  • Be sure to attach the Catalog Course Listing Change form.
  • Create a document addressing all of the points identified on the form.
  • Obtain the necessary ORIGINAL signatures.
  • Deliver one copy (Request form, catalog description, plus responses to all listed requirements) to the Division of Graduate Education 90 days prior to the date the course is to be advertised or 90 days prior to the course start date.

To add a new 580 course, download a copy of the 580 Course Request form, which is available in WORD or PDF formats below. The 580 designation is designed for experimental or one-time courses. If the course will be offered repeatedly (even if alternate years or "on demand") you are encouraged to apply for a permanent course designation. Only under special circumstances will departments be permitted to offer a course more than once as a 580. The Division of Graduate Education no longer requires that a course be run as a 580 prior to requesting a hard-number. If you believe the course might need extensive revisions following the first offering, we strongly urge you to use the 580 designation as a trial course offering, before requesting the hard-number course.

To apply, follow these steps:

  • Fill in the information on the front page of the form. You may print the form and fill in the blanks in pen or add the information to the WORD document.
  • Create a document addressing all of the points on the form.
  • Obtain the necessary ORIGINAL signatures.
  • Deliver a single copy (cover sheet request form plus responses) to the Division of Graduate Education 90 days prior to the date the course is to be advertised or 90 days prior to the course start date.

To change or delete a graduate course, download and complete the appropriate form, which is available in WORD or PDF format below.
