Capstone Courses for Seniors

The Productivity, Quality, and Outcomes agreement commits MSU-Bozeman to increase to 90 percent the number of graduating seniors engaged in capstone courses by FY99. The Assessment and Outcomes Committee approved the following definition of a capstone experience:

A capstone experience requires seniors to integrate principles, theories, and methods learned in courses required throughout the major. Students creatively analyze, synthesize, and evaluate learned knowledge in a project having a professional focus and communicate the results of the project effectively at a professional entry level by a method appropriate to the discipline.
To meet this obligation and to provide a valuable source of information for assessment, all undergraduate degree programs will require capstone courses in the MSU-Bozeman 1998-2000 catalog. Capstone courses must meet the following requirements, which were approved by the President:
  • Required senior-level class
  • Not independent, although it may have an independent component or corequisite
  • Has a communications component
  • Requires a synthesizing project

In the 1998-2000 catalog, capstone courses will be designated with "C" following the course number. Courses listed below are either currently recognized as capstone experiences or being added to the new catalog. Follow the course link for a description of a course's synthesizing project and its communications component.
