Montana Wilson

Montana Wilson, a Montana State University student from Poplar, has won a Gates Cambridge Scholarship that will fund graduate work at the University of Cambridge in England.

The Gates Cambridge Scholarship program was established in October 2000 by a donation of US$210m from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to the University of Cambridge.

Each year, Gates Cambridge will offer 80 full-cost scholarships to outstanding applicants from countries outside the UK to pursue a full-time postgraduate degree in any subject available at the University of Cambridge.

Approximately two-thirds of these awards will be offered to PhD students, with approximately 25 awards available in the US round and 55 available in the International round.

Students are selected for this award based on a variety of factors, including outstanding intellectual ability, a commitment to improving the lives of others, and leadership potential.

Since the program's founding, two Montana State University students have been awarded this prestigious scholarship. Learn more about their experiences below.

“This means a lot to me. The biggest thing is it has a lot to do with the future work I’m going to do. I have every intention of going into economic development, and this is an amazing opportunity to study at one of the world’s leading universities, in a program that is leading the field in economic development. It will give me the tools to come back and help my tribes and various tribes around the country.”

"I would not have received this scholarship without the support of my mentors and the resources available at MSU. I am excited to be attending Cambridge, but I'm even more excited that this award is something concrete to show what an incredible place MSU is."
