Module 3: Lesson / Unit Plan

This week you will start to design a lesson or unit plan. You may use the resources provided, use an existing lesson or unit that you are already familiar with, or start from scratch. You will be building on this for the rest of the semester, so don’t worry about getting it perfect right now. Please review the rubric, however, so you have the final goal in mind.

Module Objectives

  • Modify and / or adapt a lesson plan / unit to incorporate information literacy skills and standards

Examine the following lesson plan sites for inspiration and ideas:

Create

Review the LMC Program Rubric (requires an MSU login), which delineates the standards that learners are assessed throughout the program.

Additionally, review the Rubric for the final lesson plan, shown below.

Using the template below, design a lesson/unit plan. You may use whatever format works best for you. Your plan must include:

  • One or more of the course standards listed below
  • Application/integration of the AASL crosswalk standards for ISTE Students and Educators
  • Integration of one or more digital tools/emerging technologies
  • Google and database search strategies/tips
  • Mention of digital citizenship/ethical use of information
  • Local histories and cultural traditions that are relevant to the learning experience

You may base your plan off an existing one that you have seen, or you can start from scratch. You will slowly add to this plan over the course of the semester. Be sure to follow the instructions for each week, you are not required to have a fully fleshed out plan at this stage.

Course Standards

  • CAEP / ALA / AASL School Librarian Preparation Program Standards
    • 3 Ethical Use of Information
    • 2 Information Literacy
    • 3 Technology-Enabled Learning
  • Indian Education for All Essential Understandings (IEFA EU)
    • EU 1 Tribal Diversity
    • EU 2 Individual Diversity
  • Alaska Cultural Standards for Educators (AK CSforE)
    • B Using the local environment

Share & Grow

Answer the following questions in the Week 3 Discussion Forum and then respond to two or more of your classmates:

  1. Which of these elements from Week 2 might you incorporate into your lesson plan:
    1. Digital citizenship and the ethical use of information
    2. Critical thinking skills to evaluate and use information
    3. Media bias, misinformation and disinformation, “fake news”
  2. What lesson plan or activity have you identified, or will you be completely starting from scratch? If you chose an activity (versus a full plan), how might you work that into a lesson/unit plan? Copy & paste a link to the resource you’re adapting for your own use.
  3. What grade(s) or age group are you targeting?
  4. Post your draft lesson/unit plan, keeping in mind this plan will be expanded and built upon throughout the semester; it doesn’t need to be fully fleshed out at this point.
