Quick Facts About the Application Process:
- Cohort Size: The program is designed to be intimate, selecting up to 20 individuals to ensure meaningful participation and a personalized experience.
- Time Commitment: The program spans nearly the entire academic year, with 10 monthly sessions. Participants are expected to attend all sessions, demonstrating dedication and commitment.
- Selection: Due to high demand, the selection process is competitive. Preference is given to applicants who have been employed at MSU for 12+ months.
- Application: All are encouraged to apply, regardless of past attempts, as each year offers a new opportunity.
- Diversity: The program aims to create a cohort representing diverse roles and perspectives from across the university.

We are excited to learn more about you through our online application process. You will be asked to provide the following information:
- Personal Information: Your name, title, department, supervisor and contact details.
- Leadership Reflection: You will be asked to share your thoughts on MSU and insights on leadership and how it has influenced your career.
- Commitment Confirmation: Confirm you commitment that you can dedicate the required time to the program.
Tips for a Strong Application
- Write Thoughtfully: We appreciate well-written, heartfelt responses.
- Seek Feedback: If you are not used to writing essays, consider having a supervisor or peer review your responses before submitting. This can help you present your best self.
Please Note: Participants are selected by the Leadership MSU Selection Committee on the merits and quality of the information provided on the application. The Committee seeks representation from a cross-section of the MSU campus community. Application information is used solely for the selection process only and not made available or shared outside of Leadership MSU for any other purpose.
The Personal Commitment of Being Accepted into the Leadership MSU Experience:
To ensure a successful and enriching experience, participants are expected to adhere to the following commitments:
- Attendance: Your full attendance at all scheduled sessions is essential.
- Supervisor Support: Your journey will be supported by your department and supervisors, ensuring you have the resources needed to succeed and are allowed the time to attend all sessions.
- Core Values: Embody the core values of Montana State University in every action and interaction, setting a positive example for others.
- Employment Tenure: We prioritize applicants who have demonstrated their commitment to MSU by being employed for at least 12 months.
- Administrative and Peer Support: Share administrative duties and offer peer support during monthly sessions, fostering a collaborative environment.
- Facilitation and Presentation Responsibilities: Take an active role in facilitating and leading monthly sessions and working together with your peers to develop and deliver impactful group presentations contributing to the collective growth of your cohort.
The Application / Selection Process:
- Self Apply: Individuals interested in the program can apply on their own initiative by completing and submitting the online application. Supervisors can recommend individuals to self-apply. However, please note that department and supervisor approval is required and will be verified.
- Application Timeline: The online application submission process takes place in May, with the Selection Committee reviewing submissions thereafter.
- Acceptance Notification: The Selection Committee aims to assemble a diverse cohort of individuals from across campus. Successful candidates and their supervisors will be notified in June of their acceptance into the Leadership MSU program.
- Applicant Acknowledgment: Selected applicants will be asked to sign an Applicant Acknowledgment form, committing to fully participate in the year-long program.
