Synopsis of the Rocky Mountain College CBE Project

We are delighted to share with you our project for Competency Based Education. In order to prepare our pre-service teachers and aspiring leaders to implement and support this educational shift, we knew that adding a preparatory class to our curriculum would be of utmost importance. We sent out a survey to determine what current educators and leaders knew about this project. Even though we all began to hear about Competency-Based Education; CBE became very real through the work of the legislature. The message we heard from our survey was “What exactly is this?” and, “How do we do it?” Our focus shifted to preparing an implementation plan of which our new curricula would be a part and an option for professional development as well as to ascertain the readiness of the school audience. Our implementation plan attempted to answer the following questions:

  • What do teachers, leaders and other constituents know about Competency Based Education (CBE)?
  • What is Competency or Proficiency Based Education – can we come to a consensus on a definition?
  • Information and resources for community/parents , guardians, students, faculty and staff, substitutes, para-professionals as well as administrators, school board trustees, community leaders and policymakers.
