NVivo qualitative data analysis software is available to MSU faculty, staff, and students via an MSU site-wide license.  Follow the steps below to download.


Step 1: Obtain NVivo license key 

  1. Log into the Software Portal with NetID and NetID password.

  2. Navigate to the NVivo section.

  3. Click NVivo link to obtain license activation key.

Step 2: Download, install and activate

Follow the appropriate instructions below for your computer. 

NVivo for Mac (version 11) 

  • Requires Mac OS X 10.9 or newer
  • Obtain license key before proceeding (see above)
  1. Go to http://www.qsrinternational.com/nvivo-support/downloads.
  2. Click the NVivo for Mac (version 11) link to download file.
  3. Go to your Downloads folder and double-click the NVivo.dmg file to open.
  4. Slide the NVivo.appicon to the Apps folder. 
    The file is copied to your Applications folder.
  5. Go to Applications folder > CONTROL-click NVivo.app > click Open.
  6. Click Open, when prompted with: “NVivo.app” is an application downloaded from the Internet. Are you sure you want to open it?
  7. Enter your computers password, when prompted, then click OK.
  8. Click Agree to accept End-User License Agreement terms.
    The NVivo Setup dialog box opens.
  9. Click the radio button next to Enter NVivo license key and enter license key (obtained following steps at top of page).
  10. Click Next.
  11. Complete the required fields in License Activation form and then click Activate.
    A pop-up will alert you in a few seconds when the license had been activated.
  12. Click OK.
  13. Complete User Profile fields and click Continue.

NVivo should be ready to use.

NVivo 11 for Windows 

  • Requires Windows 7, 8.1, or 10
  • Obtain license key before proceeding (see above)

Download and Installation:

  1. Go to: http://www.qsrinternational.com/nvivo-support/downloads.
  2. Click NVivo 11 for Windows version appropriate for your computer (see how to find the windows, 32-bit or 64-bit, system you are running).
  3. Click Save when prompted "What do you want to do with …."

  4. Click Run.
  5. Click Yes, when prompted "Do you want to allow this app to make changes to this device."
  6. Select language for installation and click OK.
    The NVivo 11 Install Shield Wizard opens.
  7. Follow prompts to install.
    If prompted to enable .NET Framework 3.5 to operate, check button next to Enable via internet and then click Enable.
  8. Click Finish to close Installer window when installation is completed.


  1. Double-click the NVivo 11 shortcut icon on your desktop to open NVivo.
  2. Enter (or copy and paste) the license key obtained by following steps at top of page.
  1. In the License Activation dialog box, enter your details. Fields marked with an asterisk (*) must be provided.
  2. Click Activate.
    A pop-up will alert you when the license had been activated.
  3. Click OK.
  4. Complete User Profile fields and click Continue.

NVivo should be ready to use.


To find if your computer is running a 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows do the following:

Windows 10:

a)    Type System in the Search box

b)    Click System (Control Panel)

c)     Under System section, locate System type where you’ll find if you’re running a 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows


Windows 7:

Go to Start > right-click Computer >select Properties > look under System for System type.


Windows 8.1

a)    Using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, click Settings, and then click Change PC settings.  (Or swipe in from right, tap Settings > Change PC Settings) 

b)    Tap or click PC and devices, and then tap or click PC info

c)     Look under PC for System type to see if you're running a 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows.



When the Lynda page opens:

  1. Click the Sign In button (not Sign Up), then click Continue(see image below).
  2. Log in with your MSU NetID and password

IMPORTANT: If you are not prompted with the box shown above, go to http://guides.lib.montana.edu/lynda.  Enter your NetID and Password when prompted. When the Lynda page opens enter Learning NVivo into the Search field to go to tutorial.
