The Malvern Mastersizer 3000 is a laser diffraction particle size analyzer, suitable for measuring particle sizes 0.1 um - 3 mm.

A small amount of sample (~0.25g) is required for analysis, and results can be recorded within 10 minutes/sample.

A laser beam passes through a dispersed sample, and the variation in angular scattered light intensity is measured. (Small particles have a small scattering angle, while large particles have a large scattering angle.) Using Mie theory, the data is used to calculate particle size distribution in a sample.
