To ensure that students are provided the information describing the course work required for a Bachelor's degree in Earth Sciences that allows them to graduate in an efficient and timely manner. Faculty advisors provide advice concerning curricular and career issues and serve as a check on the academic progress of the student.
Students are assigned a faculty advisor at the time they officially declare a major in Earth Sciences on the basis of individual faculty advising loads. They are provided with detailed curriculum checking sheets which describe the Department, Core, and University curriculum requirements for attainment of a Bachelor's degree in Earth Sciences. Students must meet with their advisor during the pre-registration/registration period each semester in order to obtain their PDF. Students are recommended to meet with their advisor at least once per semester. In addition, all students must meet with their advisor to review their Intent to Graduate form prior to it being approved by the Department Head.
Recent Changes and Future Plans
To Improve Quality of Advising
The installation of a mechanism for student evaluation of faculty advising will provide information for advisors to make positive changes in their advising strategy and process. Also, the motivation for changes to be made by faculty advisors will be provided by the inclusion of assessment of advising into their annual reviews.
To Improve Accessibility of Advisors
Given that there has been in the past no perceived problem with the accessibility of advisors, the immediate plans are to change nothing concerning the accessibility of advisors. However, if the new student advising evaluation forms indicate a problem in this area, then appropriate remedial action will be taken to address it.
