Senior Surveys

In the spring of 2000, the MSU Senior Survey was modified to be completely administered online.  Near the end of each semester, graduating seniors are notified of the survey via email and given a link connecting them to the survey.  Those who have not responded within a couple of weeks are notified again, and finally a third time after two more weeks.  The response rate for the past two years has been as follows:

Class of 2009 (those who graduated between 7/1/08 and 6/30/09)

Survey sent to 1,804 students

Returned by 565 students

Yield: 31.3% response rate

Class of 2008 (those who graduated between 7/1/07 and 6/30/08)

Survey sent to 1,695 students

Returned by 533 students

Yield: 31.5% response rate

When taking the survey, students are asked to select one out of three groups of questions regarding their teaching and learning experiences at MSU, as well as one out of three groups of questions regarding student services.  The students self-select themselves almost equally into the three separate groups in each of the two sets of questions, providing even sampling.  Students are also asked to respond to questions particular to specific major and non-major courses and experiences.  The survey concludes by asking students to rate their overall assessment of their MSU education.

The principle advantages of providing a survey in this format include:

  • Extended student-supplied responses
  • The use of sampling techniques to target questions to specific student groups
  • The delivery individualized survey results privately to department administrators
  • Sustainability

The following are multiple series of graphs to identify trends in student satisfaction from 2002 to the present with regard to general teaching and learning experiences, advising, the core curriculum, and their majors.
