The Barley, Malt & Brewing Quality Lab is seeking an assistant.

Starting Date: ASAP upon hire.

Position title: Malt Quality Lab Research Assistant

General information:

Part to Full time employment opportunity, depending on candidate availability. Specific schedule is somewhat flexible but must work well with current lab staff. This position is a 90-day temporary hire which has potential to transition into full-time employment w/ benefits. Compensation dependent on experience.

 

Duties & Responsibilities:

The quality lab provides data to the MSU Barley Breeding Program as well as to outside stakeholders with a fee for service. The Lab supports the growth of the Craft Malt and Brewing industries and benefits Montana Agricultural constituents as well as the Montana economy. The assistant will directly support the Barley Quality Lab Director and Lab Manager by aiding in all tasks of the lab including handling, labeling and organizing samples and data, malting of barley lines for the breeding program, brewing program malts, and quality testing analysis including operation of various pieces of equipment including but not limited to NIR analyzer, CLP malters, Buhler disk mill, Pfeuffer friabilimeter, IEC mash bath, Anton Parr density meter, UV-Vis Spectrophotometer, Fisher Scientific Gallery analyzer, and Ss Brewtech 3V electric brewing system. The assistant will support brewing research aspects of the lab, including project development and novel idea generation. Additional duties will include supervising students, upholding lab safety protocols, mixing and maintaining reagents, and keeping up general lab cleanliness. The successful candidate must have attention to detail, be dependable and able to work with a large and diverse team. The barley group practices a team approach; thus, the candidate may be asked to support other aspects of the breeding program during busy times e.g. crossing, planting, and harvest.

 

Required Qualifications:

  1. B.S. in brewing, food or malt production, agriculture or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Proven organizational and time management skills
  2. Eye for detail in maintaining a clean and organized space
  3. Flexible nature, ability to adapt to evolving tasks
  4. Experience in brewing, home or professional
  5. Experience generating and managing data

 

The Successful Candidate Will:

The successful candidate will have effective written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills, time management skills, will be detail oriented, follow all university rules and policies, and will have the ability to work both independently and collaboratively with co-workers.

Physical Demands:

Ability to walk over rough and uneven terrain, lift 50 lbs, and perform occasional field work in inclement weather.
