American Mathematics Competitions

Each year, the MSU Science Math Resource Center hosts the AMC 10/12 and the AMC 8 competitions. Both are part of the American Mathematics Competition series developed by the Mathematical Association of America. The series provides an opportunity for students to develop positive attitudes toward analytical thinking and mathematics that can assist in future careers. Students apply classroom skills to unique problem-solving challenges in a competitive atmosphere.

Students who excel on the AMC 10/12 may qualify to take the American Invitational Mathematics Examination.

Fall 2022 AMC 10/12 Winners - November 2022

The MSU Science Math Resource Center hosted the American Mathematics Competition 10 / 12 contests at MSU in November 2022. AMC 10/12 is a part of the American Mathematics Competition series developed by the Mathematical Association of America. The series provides an opportunity for students to develop positive attitudes toward analytical thinking and mathematics that can assist in future careers. Students apply classroom skills to unique problem-solving challenges in a competitive atmosphere.

Science Math Resource Center announces the awards to the following top scorers: 

First place: Paul Harmon, Helena, Montana*

*Paul also qualified for the American Invitational Mathematics Exam (AIME)

Second place: Kaiya Graves, Laurel, Montana

American Mathematics Competition 8 was Jan. 23, 2023

Montana middle school students participated in the American Mathematics Competition 8 (AMC 8) on Monday, Jan. 23, 2023 at 4:30pm at MSU-Bozeman.The contest is hosted each year by Montana State University’s Science Math Resource Center. All AMC8 competitions are in person (not online) this year.

The AMC 8 is part of the American Mathematics Competition series developed by the Mathematical Association of America. It is designed to provide an opportunity for middle school students to develop positive attitudes toward analytical thinking and mathematics that can assist in future careers. Students apply classroom skills to unique problem-solving challenges in a low-stress and friendly environment. 

The material on the 25-question, 40-minute test includes topics from a typical middle school mathematics curriculum. Students up through eighth grade and under 14 1/2 years on the day of the competition are eligible to participate. Registration is free and open until spots are filled.

Registration is free for Montana students.
