AMC Overview

The American Mathematics Competition is written and developed each year by the Mathematical Association of America. The MSU Science Math Resource Center hosts the competitions for Montana middle and high school students.  Competitions are administered in-person on the MSU-Bozeman campus.  Students who are inspired to learn advanced math beyond the classroom, test their proficiency on a national level, and meet fellow students interested in mathematics are encouraged to participate.  National registration fees are covered by the center, and our staff proctors the exam.

The AMC 8 is a 25-question, 40 minute exam designed to provide middle school students an opportunity to develop an interest in advanced mathematics, analytical thinking, and problem-solving.  Students in grade 8 or below and under 14.5 years of age on the day of the competition are eligible to participate.

The AMC 10/12 A & B are 25-question, 75 minute exams for high school students to further develop advanced mathematics and problem-solving skills.  Students in grade 10 or below and under 17.5 years of age on the day of the contest can take the AMC 10A & B.  The AMC 12 covers the entire high school curriculum, including trigonometry, advanced algebra, and advanced geometry, but excluding calculus. Students in grade 12 or below and under 19.5 years of age on the day of the contest can take the AMC 12.  A & B exams are independent of each other with comparable difficulty.  High school students who excel on the AMC 10/12 may qualify to take the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME).
